Flood
Flood forecasters monitor conditions on Manitoba’s rivers and streams and track the flood forecasts of other jurisdictions whose rivers ultimately flow into Manitoba to assess possible flooding. The potential for spring flooding is affected by a number of factors including:
- how dry soil conditions were in the fall
- how deeply frozen the soil is when runoff begins
- the amount of snow cover
- temperatures that will affect how fast the snow pack will melt
- the timing of spring runoff flows from other provinces and the United States
- any additional rain or snow that falls when the spring runoff is underway
